The GAUDIUM ET SPES INSTITUTE is a resource centre for the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja. “Gaudium et Spes” , meaning “Joy and Hope”, is the opening phrase of the document in which the Second Vatican Council explains the presence and function of the Church in the world of today.

This name has been chosen to show that the institute has the overall goal of promoting, at an African level, the dialogue between the Church and modern society, as enunciated by the council.

Founded by Cardinal John Onaiyekan, Archbishop of Abuja, to offer retreats and provide renewal programmes throughout the year and to promote dialogue at all levels between the Church and Nigerian society.

This is a two-part training programme aimed at enhancing the basic counseling skills of priests and religious to enable them become more effective in providing pastoral counseling and spiritual guidance to all parishioners and those in crisis.
